Skin Fasting or skin fasting
Teresa de Miguel Miró
It's all anyone's talking about, but neither the term "skin fasting" nor the philosophy behind it is new. The Japanese company Mirai Clinic coined it a decade ago to refer to temporarily abandoning one's skincare routine. What is skin fasting, or skin fasting, based on, and what benefits does it offer?
The theory is that by eliminating all cosmetic applications, we will allow the skin to regain its homeostasis, that is, its ability to maintain a stable internal condition, giving it the opportunity to reset itself through detoxification and self-repair.
NOT EVERYTHING IS SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE
That's our mantra, because every skin is different and its needs vary if its exposome does.

A certain cosmetic minimalism is welcome as a counterpoint to the extensive routines coming from Korea, such as the well-known "7 skins".
Just as having too many products is not only wasteful but also harmful, eliminating them all at once is also disproportionate and can be detrimental. In fact, there is no scientific study that supports its supposed benefits.
Because we need to know what we're talking about: when we say skin is dry, is it due to a lack of sebum? In that case, perhaps we could forgo moisturizers for a while to try to restore its natural production (at least 2-3 weeks), even at the risk of causing other imbalances. Or is it due to hormonal causes, seasonal dehydration, sudden temperature changes, medication, or other more serious conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis? Because in these cases, if the skin barrier function is already compromised, eliminating moisturizers can worsen pre-existing conditions and lead to atopic dermatitis.

As for detoxification, the skin already performs this function excellently. It's its natural function, after all. What certainly helps, in addition to a diet based on seasonal fruits and vegetables and ample hydration, is choosing the right cosmetic products—balanced, toxin-free, and with appropriate ingredients. One of the many advantages of molecular cosmetics is that it allows for the effective delivery of various active ingredients without overloading the skin.
Basic rules for a safe skin fast
- Don't skip your hygiene routine. Morning and night. Your skin still needs gentle cleansing with suitable products.
- Don't skip a gentle weekly exfoliation. Epidermal renewal continues its natural process.
- Do not deprive the eye contour of its daily care with products specifically designed for our most fragile area.
- Do not stop acne treatment. Abruptly stopping the active ingredients you use for prevention and treatment will cause flare-ups and worsening of the condition.
- Do not discontinue any treatment for any other type of skin condition.
- Do not stop Vitamin A treatment. As we've already seen, the retinol adaptation protocol is prudent—slow and gradual—to build tolerance. If you abruptly stop retinol intake, all the progress made will have been for nothing, and you'll have to start the protocol from scratch when you resume it.
- Never skip sunscreen. Never. In our post "Sun Cosmetics," we explain in detail why sun protection is essential 365 days a year. This is especially true if we're also neglecting to provide our skin with the minimum moisture and antioxidants needed for protection and nourishment.
LESS IS MORE
However, "less is more" might be exactly what your skin is crying out for. Perhaps, instead of talking about a skin fast, we could talk about a skin diet.
At Beldon Beauty we advocate for a conscious use of cosmetic products: the exact ones to meet the peculiar and unique needs of each person.
And it was precisely with a focus on simplifying our routine and returning to quality basics that the cosmetics brand Ayuna was born. Its creators, two renowned Spanish women in the beauty industry, sought to offer skin more with less, without compromising on excellence, through cutting-edge research that allows for the best formulations. They also embraced environmental awareness. All of this is achieved "through the intersection of nature, high technology, and luxury," articulated in a process of innovation, product, and methodology.
Their slogans “Less is Beauty” and “An Ode to Simple Beauty” say it all. In Ayuna's words: “The best beauty routine is achieved not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. Our commitment is based on simplifying skincare: precisely supporting the complexion by providing only the essential ingredients needed to achieve maximum skin performance.” You can discover more about this brand's philosophy and its creators in our Beldon Stories .
