When beauty meets art

Anita Suarez

Biography

“Creativity has always been a part of my life. I studied design at Parsons School of Design in NY and worked for several years in the fashion industry, both in NY and Madrid. I completed my training with a master's degree in graphic design.”

Art has always been present in both my personal and professional life. It has always influenced my work and has been a great source of inspiration for me.

Fashion and graphic design were merely preparation for what became my true passion: CREATING pieces where I can show my emotions, my way of seeing life, where my most intimate self is reflected.

I consider my work a part of myself...optimistic, colorful, joyful, yet at the same time pure geometry and interplay of planes, creating depth, where my need for order and my constant search to delve into what truly matters reside. And to show that everything, as in life, has multiple layers.

As for my personal life, I'm very family-oriented; I love having friends over. I also enjoy traveling, especially in Asia, reading a lot, researching, and discovering restaurants, galleries, and museums.

What is beauty to you and what role does it play in art from your point of view?

“Beauty is in everyone; you just have to learn to look without judgment. Even the greatest imperfections can be beautiful, and we shouldn't always be guided by established standards.”
Beauty is part of loving and caring for yourself from within, and above all, smiling no matter what life throws your way. Beauty is in nature, but also in small things, everyday objects, and the moments we experience… This has made me a very observant person and helped me appreciate the many beautiful things that surround us.

As for art… A piece that can move you, make you feel good, that you want to look at endlessly, that sparks your curiosity… that's the beauty of being able to communicate through your work!”

What inspires you to create your works? And tell us, is there any work that has been especially meaningful to you?

“My work is heavily influenced by Eastern minimalism. My travels through Asia, especially to Japan, are a constant source of inspiration. Origami and its culture in general, so complex—modern yet traditional—fascinate me! For colors, I draw inspiration from nature: a landscape, the sea, a sunset…but also from the use of color by other artists, from classical painters like El Greco and Vermeer to Bridget Riley and Josef Albers.”

All the works are significant to me, they are all very carefully considered and arise from the emotional state I am in at any given moment, but I have a lot of fun when I take risks and make pieces that, although within my style, are different, like the ELEKTR A series.”

What is the best advice you have received throughout your professional career?

"Fight to achieve your dreams and be very consistent, but always be honest with yourself and others."

Who are your beauty icons?

“My mother was a beauty on the outside, but especially on the inside. She explained to me the importance of taking care of yourself without becoming obsessive, which is a sign of respect for oneself and others. She taught me many beauty routines that I always follow, but without forgetting to also take care of our inner selves and the inner selves of those around us.

I like different kinds of beauty and people who may not fit the stereotypical beauty standards that are being imposed on us through social media, but who, with their movements, elegance, and style, are incredibly attractive, like Cate Blanchett, for example.

I also really like Diane Kruger, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Tomasi Hill, and Giorgia Tordini.”

BEAUTY QUESTIONNAIRE

- What is your morning routine?

“A glass of lukewarm water first thing in the morning, a good mindful shower, and a really good breakfast (it’s my favorite meal of the day). Whole-wheat toast with extra virgin olive oil, avocado, and lots of fruit. Of course, I never leave the house without applying vitamin C serum, a super moisturizer, and sunscreen.”

- Favorite products

Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Glow Drops illuminate the skin. They’re perfect for a special occasion—wear them over makeup or on their own! They leave your skin looking amazing. La Prairie’s Skin Caviar Liquid Lift and Freshly Cosmetics’ Golden Radiance Body Oil moisturize the body.”

- A foolproof trick or product

“I love enhancing my eyes; they say a lot about us, especially now that we're always wearing masks. I'm obsessed with eyelashes. I apply M2 Beauté Eyelash Activating Serum every night, and it works great!”
I also like Charlotte Tilbury's Beauty Light Wand highlighter; I use it when I go out at night.”

-Your favorite beauty look that never lets you down

“I used to wear a lot of makeup, I always enjoyed it… However, now I think that having good skin and applying a light foundation, mascara, moisturized lips, and blush is more than enough. The more natural, the better!”

- How do you take care of your beauty from the inside out?

“When everything is right on the inside, it shows on the outside. We are a reflection of our emotional state, and that's why it's so important to maintain a healthy inner life. Thanks to my mother-in-law, Ana Pellón, I discovered mindfulness; she's a teacher, and although I don't practice it as much as I should, she taught me to live in the moment, the here and now.”

Extremely important for peace of mind!
I also watch my diet without going overboard; I eat practically no sugar or fried food, and I'm lucky enough to love all kinds of fruits and vegetables, so I eat them constantly.”

- Favorite exercise or sport

“I’m not very athletic! I train 2 or 3 times a week with my trainer Ana, at Metropolitan Abascal, where I do exercises mainly to strengthen my muscles, but what I like most is taking very long walks both in Madrid and in the countryside, with my husband, Yago.”

-An area for improvement (in terms of beauty)

“Many! Drinking more water, putting moisturizer on my body, doing more exercise… Although I am becoming more and more aware, as I get older, of the importance of taking care of myself to stay healthy and I try to be serious and consistent in my routines.”

To us you are PERFECT, but tell us if there is something you like a little less about yourself, and what you have managed to improve, based on confidence, over time.

“Thank you so much! But I’m far from perfect. There are days when I find flaws everywhere, but it’s true that with age you put things into perspective and learn that sometimes you shouldn’t scrutinize yourself so much. I used to hate my freckles (I have them all over my face, especially in summer) and I used all sorts of products to cover them up and try to have even skin. Now I accept them as part of me, and sometimes I even like them!”
