Interview with

Elizabeth González

and the importance of feeding (ourselves) properly

Biography

I studied nutrition; it's a subject that has always interested me since I was very young, and I enjoyed it immensely. Afterwards, I earned a degree in food science and technology and continued my training in maternal nutrition, which I find fascinating.

When was @Mamá Slow born? What's behind this project, which has also become a book?

It was born out of my own motherhood and my patients. From all those concerns that were so beneficial to me and my children. I realized the lack of valuable information available on how to care for ourselves; I only heard phrases like, "You're a mother now, that's just how it is," "Feeling good or taking care of yourself is over..." But I began to discover that motherhood is a unique opportunity to rediscover the best in ourselves, to enjoy life with our children, and to live authentically. So I felt a strong urge to share it with other women.

How does good nutrition affect our lives? What's the best way to achieve a balanced diet?

We eat around five times a day; it's one of the activities we do most often, so the impact is huge. It's significant when we don't eat what's best for us, but it's also incredibly positive when we find the perfect way to eat for ourselves and our lifestyle. I believe the best way to nourish ourselves is by listening to our bodies. When we listen to our unique needs and value them, we can discover the nutrients that are ready to help us.

When does a baby begin to relate to food?

According to the most prestigious scientific journals, a woman's nutrition several years before she becomes pregnant will have a significant impact on the health of her future children. They may not yet be eating food at that stage, but indirectly and importantly, it will greatly affect them. I believe all women deserve this kind of information. Later, they will learn from the moment we hold them in our arms and see us eat. They learn what Mommy eats, what it smells like, and what it tastes like if they are breastfed. Taking care of our nutrition during motherhood is undoubtedly a gift for both of us.

Where do you see yourself in the long term?

I don't usually think much about the future. I do have a clear direction, though, and I trust that whatever comes will be for the best. In the long run, I'd love to live in the countryside, and I know I'll continue working in this field—in what format and how? Life will tell.

What advice would you give to parents on how to educate their children about good nutrition?

Let them start with themselves, eating the way they would like their children to eat. Children learn their eating habits by watching how people eat at home, what their parents eat, and how mealtimes are structured. And then, let them dedicate the same patience, love, and respect to their children's nutrition as they do to all other learning. No parent expects a child to know how to multiply in the first year of school. This is the same principle, except that their nutritional education will be a key factor in their health for the rest of their lives. It's worth it.

Do you think it's important to eat and share food as a family?

It's incredibly important; I think it's the turning point between a daily struggle and things just flowing smoothly. When we eat with children, we have a golden opportunity for them to see how we eat, for them to learn, to give them affection and confidence, and for them to develop a healthy relationship with food, regardless of how much they eat. Having a good relationship with food is a gift.

What is your nutrition like? What aspects are most important to you?

For me, nutrition is a powerful tool that I use every day. It helps prevent the children from getting sick, or when one of us is ill, to have more energy or concentration, and so on. It's truly medicine. As for the meals, they're simple, made with ingredients from the garden or the market. Almost everything in the pantry is healthy, so it's easy to create naturally healthy combinations. Nutrition is very powerful.

In the long term, where would you like to be?

I feel like MamaSlow has just begun, and I have so much to share so we can enjoy and harness the power of nutrition and nature together in our home. Wonderful things are coming.

Relationship with beauty:

What is beauty to you and how do you experience it in your daily routine?

It's the light we give off when we're ourselves. I believe there's nothing more beautiful than an authentic person.

What or who inspires you in your daily life?

My children, their free, cheerful and uncomplicated way of being, I love them.

Who are your beauty icons?

One of them is my mother, with her unique style, I love it.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

I think it was during my flower therapy training; they taught us about the flowers that help boost self-esteem and stop obsessing over insecurities. It helped me, and it still does.

Beauty Questionnaire:

What is your skincare routine?

I'm increasingly embracing the "less is more" philosophy. I wash my face with natural soap, use jasmine or rosehip hydrosol, and an essential oil serum. Then a touch of concealer, cream blush, and mascara. And of course, a good breakfast ;)

A foolproof trick or product

A good natural soap that you love so much and is so great that you can use it on your face, body, and even for the kids. It gives me peace of mind.

How do you take care of your beauty from the inside out?

Speaking to myself with love and being compassionate and encouraging to myself.

Is there anything left for you to learn or try in the beauty world?

I'm sure there are many things, I really enjoy discovering natural products, free of endocrine disruptors, simple products, but with intention.

What are your favorite beauty treatments?

Going to Beldon Beauty is always a treat. A few weeks ago I enjoyed a Brazilian massage and it was magical. I also love how the Instant Glow treatment leaves my skin; it's unbeatable.
